Narrowband UVB Phototherapy

Narrowband is a safe and effective way for treating patients with psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema and other photoresponsive skin disorders. Ultravioletlight B (UVB) present in natural sunlight is an effective way of treating psoriasis. The UVB light treatments are set up for certain lengths of time on a regular schedule under a doctors direction. Studies indicate that with UVB treatments psoriasis clears faster and produces longer remission .

Who is a candidate for UVB? Individuals that have thin plaques of psoriasis with moderate to severe disease and are responsive to natural sunlight.

Will I need additional treatment? UVB may be used alone or in combination with topical treatments or systemic or biologic treatments.

What is the treatment? The patient stands in a treatment light box lined with special UVB lamps with the ultraviolet light. The length of treatment time varies depending upon the severity of psoriasis but generally it is just minutes. A patient will usually receive treatments three times per week to reach the maximum amount of improvement.

Will this cure my psoriasis? UVB treatments help control psoriasis. They may be resumed if the lesions begin to reappear. Sometimes, UVB is continued on a maintenance basis. Every individual is different and results may vary.
